Sopapillas

  1. Sopapillas
  2. Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening or unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for dusting)
  • Honey or chocolate sauce (for serving)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well to ensure even distribution.
  2. Cut in the vegetable shortening or softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until smooth. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
  7. Once the oil is hot, fry the dough pieces in batches until they puff up and turn golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the sopapillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  9. While still warm, toss the sopapillas in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until well coated.
  10. Serve warm with honey or chocolate sauce for dipping.
