- Sopapillas
- Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable shortening or unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Oil for frying
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for dusting)
- Honey or chocolate sauce (for serving)
Directions:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well to ensure even distribution.
- Cut in the vegetable shortening or softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until smooth. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
- Once the oil is hot, fry the dough pieces in batches until they puff up and turn golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Remove the sopapillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, toss the sopapillas in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until well coated.
- Serve warm with honey or chocolate sauce for dipping.
