French Onion Beef and Noodles is the ultimate comforting dish. With its tender, juicy beef simmered in a rich broth, sweet caramelized onions, and a touch of melted cheese, this meal is full of deep, savory flavors. The noodles soak up the rich sauce, creating a perfect harmony of textures.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb beef stew meat or flank steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup dry white wine (optional)
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 8 oz egg noodles
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional, for topping)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Directions:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-6 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown.
- Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic and stir to coat. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, to make a roux.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, white wine (if using), Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, and bay leaf. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Return the beef to the skillet and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- While the beef is simmering, cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- Remove the bay leaf from the beef mixture and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Add the cooked noodles to the beef and onion mixture and stir to combine.
- If desired, sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese on top and place the skillet under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
