  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour

Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, melted butter, salt, nutmeg, and egg. Add the frothy yeast mixture and stir well.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut out donuts and holes.
  6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Remove the donuts from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
  8. To make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  9. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and place them on a wire rack to set.
