These Stuffing Balls are the perfect bite-sized version of the classic stuffing, crisped up to perfection and packed with savory flavors. The crispy exterior gives way to a soft, herby interior that is bursting with rich sage, thyme, and fresh vegetables. The mozzarella cheese (if added) creates a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth surprise in every bite.
- Ingredients:
- 1 loaf (about 8 cups) day-old bread, cubed (use a rustic or sourdough bread)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1/2 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional, for added richness)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for greasing)
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet with olive oil or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and garlic, and sauté for 4-5 minutes, or until softened and fragrant.
- Add the chopped fresh sage, thyme, salt, and pepper to the skillet, and cook for an additional minute to release the flavors. Remove from heat.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread, sautéed vegetables, and fresh parsley. Stir well to combine.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs and chicken broth. Pour this mixture over the bread and vegetables, stirring to moisten all the bread cubes.
- If desired, stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese for added richness.
- Using your hands or a spoon, form the mixture into 1 1/2 to 2-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the stuffing balls are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm, garnished with additional fresh parsley if desired.
