Classic Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes

Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes are a quintessential dish that brings comfort and warmth to any meal. The tender sweet potatoes soak up a luscious, buttery syrup flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, creating a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Topped with crunchy pecans, this dish is a flavorful side that complements any Southern feast.

  1. Ingredients:
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Place the sliced sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 10-12 minutes until slightly tender but still firm. Drain the sweet potatoes and arrange them in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, water, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the syrup is smooth and bubbly.
  4. Pour the syrup evenly over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the syrup has thickened.
  6. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans over the sweet potatoes during the last 5 minutes of baking for added crunch.
  7. Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving.
