Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes are a quintessential dish that brings comfort and warmth to any meal. The tender sweet potatoes soak up a luscious, buttery syrup flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, creating a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Topped with crunchy pecans, this dish is a flavorful side that complements any Southern feast.
- Ingredients:
- 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- Place the sliced sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 10-12 minutes until slightly tender but still firm. Drain the sweet potatoes and arrange them in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, water, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the syrup is smooth and bubbly.
- Pour the syrup evenly over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the syrup has thickened.
- If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans over the sweet potatoes during the last 5 minutes of baking for added crunch.
- Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving.
