Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 cup cheese (cheddar or your favorite), cut into small cubes
- Coarse sea salt, for topping
Directions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into equal portions. Flatten each piece and place a cheese cube in the center. Fold the dough around the cheese and roll into a ball.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda. Carefully drop in the pretzel balls for about 30 seconds, then remove and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
