Cheese-Stuffed Pretzels

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup cheese (cheddar or your favorite), cut into small cubes
  • Coarse sea salt, for topping

Directions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Divide the dough into equal portions. Flatten each piece and place a cheese cube in the center. Fold the dough around the cheese and roll into a ball.
  5. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda. Carefully drop in the pretzel balls for about 30 seconds, then remove and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
