Saltine Toffee is a sweet and salty treat that’s incredibly easy to make, yet irresistibly delicious. The crunchy Saltine crackers provide the perfect base, while the rich caramel and smooth chocolate coating create a decadent flavor combination. The sprinkling of sea salt adds the perfect finishing touch to balance out the sweetness.
- Ingredients:
- 40 Saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (for garnish)
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and arrange the Saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire pan.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture has thickened slightly.
- Pour the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the crackers, ensuring that each cracker is covered. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and the edges begin to caramelize.
- Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let the chocolate chips sit for a minute or two to soften, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
- Sprinkle the sea salt over the chocolate layer for a sweet and salty finish. Let the toffee cool at room temperature for about 10 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until the toffee is completely set.
- Once set, break the toffee into pieces and enjoy! Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
