Breakfast Cheese Danish

This Breakfast Cheese Danish features a perfectly flaky puff pastry enveloping a rich and creamy filling, making it the ideal treat to start your day. The slightly tangy cream cheese mixture pairs beautifully with the sweetness of fruit preserves, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 cup fruit preserves (optional: raspberry, strawberry, or apricot)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest (optional for added flavor)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 4 equal squares or rectangles, depending on your preference.
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Optionally, add lemon zest for a citrusy kick.
  4. Spoon a generous amount of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of each pastry square, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. If using fruit preserves, add a small spoonful of your choice in the center of the cream cheese filling.
  6. Fold the corners of the puff pastry towards the center, creating a pocket around the filling.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with the milk to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the pastries with the egg wash to give them a golden, glossy finish.
  8. Place the pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Allow the cheese danishes to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature!
