Each bite is soft, sweet, and satisfying, making it a treat that’s ideal for any autumn occasion.

Ingredients:

  • Cake
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    • 1/4 tsp cloves
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
    • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • Cinnamon Glaze
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • 2-3 tbsp milk (or apple cider for extra flavor)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the applesauce, mixing just until combined. If using, fold in the nuts.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
  7. To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar and cinnamon, then add milk (or apple cider) a little at a time until you reach a smooth, pourable consistency. Drizzle over the cooled cake and let set before slicing.
