Amish Onion Fritters

  1. Ingredients:
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  2. Add the sliced onions to the dry ingredients and toss to coat the onions evenly.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Pour the wet mixture into the onion-flour mixture, stirring until everything is well combined.
  4. Heat 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, flattening slightly with the back of a spoon. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  6. Transfer the fritters to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or as a side dish.
